Living on a farm can be physically exhausting at times! There is always something to do… trees to cut, hay to bale, keeping the cows free of flies & ticks AND constantly mending fences. However, I was not prepared for the emotional side of farming. We lost our first cow and had to bury him. He was the only cow that was tagged in his right ear (#204) and I always made it a point to seek him out when checking on them. We are not sure what happened and that has really bothered me. We try to check on them every night but the two nights leading up to when he was found it had stormed so we didn’t make it out to the field.
This is such a tight herd and they showed signs of grieving for him and also became skittish around us after they had all stood at the fence and watched their friend being buried. Slowly we are regaining their trust and even though I know death is a part of the farm it still broke my heart.
